Can Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine Help Hay Fever?
At Village Remedies clinic in Balmain, Sydney, we use traditional acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to help relieve the symptoms of hay fever (or allergic rhinitis).
When spring blows in, it can mark the beginning of months of suffering for those with hay fever. Stuffed up sinuses, runny nose with itchy eyes, headaches and poor concentration can really make life rough when the pollen is in the air. For some it doesn’t even stop with spring time but continues all year round.
Typical symptoms of hay fever include one or more of the following:
- Runny nose
- Itchy nose
- Sneezing
- Itchy, watery eyes
- Congested nose
Usually these symptoms have a trigger, most commonly:
- Pollens
- Mould spores
- Dust mites
- Animal dander
The typical advice is to take antihistamines and try to avoid known triggers. Decongestants and nasal sprays may also offer some relief. However for many, hay fever can be very frustrating to deal with.
How Can Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine Help With Hay Fever?
From a Chinese medicine perspective sinus issues are often related to digestive function and an immune system that is overactive. Too much inflammation in the body and digestion that promote inflammation and mucus production need to be addressed.
When you come for help with hay fever at Village Remedies in Balmain, Sydney, our goals will be to: 1) improve circulation of the sinuses, and; 2) help the body better be able to come out of a sympathetic dominant (fight or flight) state into a parasympathetic dominant (rest, digest and recover) state. This can help to decrease inflammation, improve recovery and lower immune sensitivity. By working on #2, we’re trying to help your body better look after you so you rely less on symptomatic relief.
