Can Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine Help Stress?
At Village Remedies acupuncture and Chinese herbal clinic in Balmain, Sydney, we talk about stress in a particular way. Typically when we hear the word stress, we associate it with ideas of being overwhelmed or burnt out, but this extreme doesn’t cover the full spectrum of stress that we encounter on a daily basis.
When Hans Selye originally coined the term “stress” back in 1936, his definition was “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”. Another way to think about it is as a load that forces your body to step up and adapt. For example: waking up early for work before you’ve had enough sleep is a stress on the system; travelling in peak hour traffic is a stress on the system; running after the kids is a stress on the system; eating lunch on the go is a stress on the system; etc, etc.
It’s important to remember stress isn’t always bad, however, for example exercise is a great example of a good stress that causes healthy adaptations (when done right with the right amount of recovery). It’s only when the stressors, or amount of load builds up and continues for an extended period, without the necessary “de-load” or “de-stress” time.
This is the kind of definition we use when talking about stress at Village Remedies. There’s nothing wrong with being busy, but we do want to make sure we’re helping you offset the amount of load or stress coming in from life, to help keep you feeling strong, happy and healthy.
