New Achilles Tendinopathy Recovery Video Resources
Achilles tendinopathy is an overuse injury where the structure of the tendon becomes compromised and can progressively degenerate, leading to chronic pain, limited ability to exercise and an increased risk of rupture. In the past it was considered a tendonitis where inflammation plays the main role, however, in recent years research has shown that it is in fact degenerative changes driving the pathology, with inflammation playing a minimal role.
Often this injury will start with an acute flare up of pain around the achilles but may also radiate into the heel or ankle. Usually pain is worst first thing in the morning and with trying to run. There may be swelling and tenderness at the tendon as well. If left unchecked or not properly treated, this may settle down into a chronic low to moderate chronic pain, preventing a person from being as active as they once were. As time goes on, there may be periodic flare ups of pain as more of the tendon is affected, increasing the risk of rupture and major injury.
Rest alone is rarely enough to make a complete recovery and doing the wrong exercises such as stretching or running will only make the issue worse. Correct diagnosis and treatment is a must.
At Village Remedies clinics in Balmain and Sydney City CBD, when we work with people who have achilles tendinopathy, we take a structured approach involving not only the physical assessment and treatment of the injury, but also a holistic approach to supporting overall health and recovery. We use acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine differently according to what phase of recovery you're at.
